Structural Engineering: bridges, towers and domes
Instructor: Jan Ham
Ages: 7-9
Six Thursdays, 1:00PM - 2:30PM
Tuition: $175
Non refundable materials fee: $75
In this series of six hands-on classes, children ages 7-9 will use STEM+Art skills to explore structural engineering.
use their bodies to learn what it feels like to be a structure
explore and draw structural elements from the architecture around them
build arches, trusses, columns and beams
turn basic structures into tunnels, domes, flying buttresses and more
test and measure the strength of their structures
develop a structural vocabulary
have fun designing and building super-structures and bridges.
As they build, the children will use many specific STEM+Art+21st Century Skills based on MA Learning Standards. Plus, choosing from a variety of interesting homework activities, the children will be able to extend their learning and create more drawings and structures to share with their classmates.
Full tuition cost is $175. All materials are included with this fee. This class is designed for ages 7-9. A non-refundable $75 materials fee goes toward the full cost of tuition.
Instructor Jan Ham, of the Children’s Design Studio, founded the Boston Society for Architecture’s K-12 Learning By Design in Massachusetts program, and taught an Architectural Studio course at UMass Lowell’s College of Engineering’s DesignCamp. She has seen, first-hand, the power of hands-on project-based learning; and believes that, given the opportunity, children are eager to, and wholly capable of, expressing their ideas about their world through design.
