Where would a nation be without its art? History is composed of many elements—events, memorable dates, and important people, for example. Together, these elements make up a piece of our nation’s story. But, beneath that history is another fascinating picture. A kind of tapestry. In this class we will explore the art, folklore and music of North America that together make up this vibrant tapestry. We’ll begin by studying American Indian folklore, touch on spooky stories of the Northeast, spirituals, trickster tales and fabled creature sightings. We’ll listen to and interpret the music of the time. And analyse its influence on founding of the United States. And we’ll study and experiment with traditional arts and crafts. We’ll take the time to examine and enjoy each piece art to gain a delightful, informative window into the lives of the people who make up the story of the nation. Each class will experiment with performative storytelling, music or art techniques.
